Dr Poole was a lecturer in psychology at the University of Edinburgh. He was visited by John Rebus in connection with the murder of Ronnie McGrath, to enquire about the occult nature of the murder scene. Poole told Rebus about the covens in Edinburgh, and then put him onto one of his students with an interest in the occultm, Charlie Vanderhyde.
