'The Sutherland Bar was a popular watering-hole. It contained no jukebox, no video machines, no bandits. The decor was spartan, and the TV usually flickered and jumped. Ladies had not been welcome until late into the 1960s. There had, it seemed, been something to hide: the best pint of draught beer in Edinburgh.'

Located close to the Great London Road Police Station, it is a popular haunt for officers such as McGregor Campbell, Anthony McCall and John Rebus. The barman, Tom, is known to a few customers including Jim Stevens. They don't cater for lunchtime clientele, their only food being crisps and nuts.
